Coventry Driving Test Centre (Bayton Road): What to Expect

Taking your test at Coventry’s Bayton Road test centre? Here’s everything you need to know — from where to park, to the routes you’ll drive, to the common mistakes candidates make.

Where Is Coventry Test Centre?

Coventry Practical Driving Test Centre is located at:

181 Bayton Road, Exhall, Coventry CV7 9EL

The centre is situated in the Bayton Road Industrial Estate, just off the A444 north of Coventry city centre. It’s about a 15-minute drive from the centre of Coventry, depending on traffic.

There is limited parking at the test centre itself, so your instructor will normally drive you there and wait in the car park during your test.

What to Bring on Test Day

  • Photocard driving licence: Both the photocard is required. If you’ve changed address, make sure it’s updated on GOV.UK
  • Your instructor’s car: You’ll take the test in the car you’ve been learning in (or a hire car with dual controls)
  • Glasses or contact lenses if you need them for the number plate reading test

Arrive at least 10 minutes early. If you’re late, you’ll lose your slot and the £62 fee.

What Happens During the Test

The practical driving test lasts approximately 40 minutes and includes:

1. Eyesight Check

You’ll be asked to read a number plate from 20 metres away. If you fail this, the test ends immediately.

2. “Show Me, Tell Me” Questions

Two vehicle safety questions: one “tell me” (answered verbally) and one “show me” (demonstrated while driving). Getting one wrong counts as a minor fault; getting both wrong is still only one minor.

3. General Driving

About 20 minutes of normal driving on a variety of roads. The examiner will direct you and assess your ability to handle junctions, roundabouts, traffic lights, and lane changes safely.

4. Independent Driving

Around 20 minutes of following a sat-nav or road signs independently. The examiner will set a destination, and you follow the sat-nav in the test car. It’s fine to ask for confirmation — you won’t fail for going the wrong way.

5. Manoeuvres

You’ll be asked to perform one of three possible manoeuvres:

  • Parallel park at the side of the road
  • Park in a bay (either driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out)
  • Pull up on the right, reverse for two car lengths, then rejoin traffic

6. Emergency Stop (1 in 3 chance)

About one in three candidates are asked to do an emergency stop. The examiner will warn you in advance that they’ll raise their hand and say “stop.”
